Homeland Security and Oversight Committees Commence Investigation into ICE Medical Whistleblower Complaint, Request Documents from ICE, LaSalle, Irwin County Detention Center
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Chairwoman of the Oversight and Reform Committee, Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY), the Chairwoman of the Border Security, Facilitation, and Operations Subcommittee, and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the Chairman of the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Subcommittee, sent a letter to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), LaSalle Corrections, and the Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC) in Georgia requesting documents regarding the treatment of detainees at ICDC. These records are necessary to assist the Committees in their investigation into troubling allegations of medical neglect, unsanitary conditions, and abuse raised by a nurse at ICDC and by ICDC detainees in a whistleblower complaint filed last week.
“Among other allegations, [the ICDC nurse] has alleged that women who were detained at the ICDC were sent to an outside medical provider to undergo gynecological procedures—including but not limited to hysterectomies—without providing informed consent. She has also alleged that there was repeated disregard for the safety of both employees and detainees in contravention of protocols recommended by federal authorities to control the spread of coronavirus,” the Chairs wrote. “These allegations, if true, are a shock to the conscience.”
